Surf's Up for Down Syndrome event in Huntington Beach – OC Beach Blog : Things to do in OC – Orange County Events
Here's a great event, for a great cause.
If you're looking to give back, check out an event called "Surf's Up for Down Syndrome" happening on Feb. 3, an event hosted by the International Surfing Museum of Huntington Beach and Rex and Jennifer Hudler’s Team Up For Down Syndrome.
It's the first time the event is being held, and will happen right in front of Sandy’s Beach Grill on the sand on the south side of the Huntington Beach pier. Hundreds of local businesses, community leaders and fans are expected to come together in support of education and services for children that have special needs in cities across America.
Here's a bit more about the event:
The event will start with an afternoon of beach and surfing activities involving youths with Down syndrome who will interact with surfing and baseball personalities and legends. Surfing personalities who will participate include four-time world champion Lisa Andersen, surfing legend Peter “PT” Townend, local professional Danny Nichols, and champion Jericho Poppler. Local Angels catcher Hank Conger, and former Angels greats Mark Langston and Rex “Wonder Dog” Hudler, will also be in attendance.
The event includes a cocktail hour with ukulele music from Shirley Orlando’s ukulele ensemble, dinner, and silent and live auction that feature surfing and baseball memorabilia, as well as one-of-a kind beach, sport, and entertainment experiences. Celebrity contributors include the newest Angels player Albert Pujols, writer Chris Epting, and Rex Hudler. Live surf music featuring the Chantays will complete the evening. Valet parking is complimentary, and resort attire is suggested.
Team Up For Down Syndrome, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, was created in honor of the Hudlers’ son, Cade, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome fourteen years ago. Although there have been challenges, Cade has been a true gift in their lives. He has inspired them to help raise awareness of the positive contributions that individuals with Down syndrome make in our society.
For years, Team Up has helped improve the lives of individuals and families affected by Down syndrome. The goal is to raise public awareness or the positive contributions that individuals with Down syndrome can make in our society, while helping them reach their full potential.
The International Surfing Museum, also a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, is known worldwide for a stunning collection of surfing's cultural artifacts. They are celebrating their 25th year of preserving, presenting and bringing to life surfing history in beautiful downtown Huntington Beach…Surf City. The current exhibits feature the Endless Summer camera, Duke Kahanamoku's shrine, Dick Dale's shrine and the Surfing Walk of Fame exhibit. The museum’s mission is to protect the past, participate in the present and influence the future of all aspects of surfing's culture.
The International Surfing Museum is celebrating its silver anniversary year with a series of exciting events, and this promises to be one of the most popular.
Sponsors of the event include the Angels Baseball Foundation, the Chantays, DeLillo Chevrolet, Don the Beachcomber, Duke’s Huntington Beach, Enlarge Media, GJC Products, H A Covert Enterprises, Home Depot, Huntington Beach Surf School, Island Bazaar, Lisa Karos and Re/Max Select One, Legends Beer, Pierside Gallery at Bella Terra, Primo Beer, Sandy’s Beach Grill, the Shorebreak Hotel, the Southern California Woodie Club, UPS, Wasserman Media, the Waterfront Hilton, and Young’s Market.
