Being a Human Being: The Battle for Spirituality

Being a Human Being: The Battle for Spirituality Image

We did not come to this planet to be Spiritual we came here to be a human being, to experience the emotions and situations that all human beings experience and to try to deal with them the best way we can.

Take me for example, like everyone I have had various degrees of success ranging from very little when I was younger to what I hope is a fair level of decency now. However, I do not try to be Spiritual because.

Well because we can't. Firstly, who defines what Spirituality is so that we can 'be it'? for example, for some people being honest is Spiritual, for others it isn't because they may consider honesty to have a potential to hurt people. neither of these opinions is necessarily correct, because being honest can hurt even though you are gentle, but by the same token not being honest can cost people a great deal more in the long run.

Spirituality is a Spiritual concept and we don't live in the Spirit world. I'm sure that when we're in the Spirit World it will be easier to be Spiritual because we will then be Spiritual beings. I feel, and Amos certainly feels, that we try too hard on this side and often make ourselves miserable by setting goals that we have to miss because we are human. He says that he weeps for us sometimes when he sees the pain we put ourselves through by setting our goals too high.

The other thing I hate about Spirituality more than I can tell you is when people use the word as a weapon to indicates that they find others wanting that really, really upsets me.

If you are human how on earth can anyone expect you to be an oasis of serenity all the time? If you hurt someone how can you expect them to 'be Spiritual' and if they're not 'being Spiritual' around you then have you done something to create that feeling in them? If someone is going through a tough time can they always be Spiritual during the difficult moments, of course they can't.

Not only that, if you were truly Spiritual how on God's good earth could you possibly tell someone else that they aren't? Someone please explain that to me because I just can't see it.

The other thing that I find most distasteful is when someone starts defending their own Spirituality because someone has told them that they're not. In defending and pointing out how Spiritual and lovely they are they're falling into the trap of being un-Spiritual by having a go back.

Why shouldn't they feel the need to defend themselves though? They're hurt so they slap back. It would just be better if we all left the word Spiritual out of such conversations because it really has no place.

So, let's move on to some suggestions. First Amos's take on emotions in the Spirit World.

In the Spirit world we just 'are'. We have emotions and we allow emotions, we never tell someone that they cannot have an emotion. to do that is to cause the emotion to be buried and fester until there is a problem. We allow each other to be who they are and we accept their emotions as a reaction to their circumstances. We do not judge, we do not denigrate them as beings, we just allow. ours is a perfect world not because people are not real – but because they are. We do not play games. We do not pretend. There is no way that we should act and we do not demand perfection from each other. We deal with each other with kindness and honesty, and because we do the issues simply fade away

So let's follow that through a little and apply it to this world.

  • Firstly accept that you are human and so are others, we are being human beings in this life and emotions are part of that being – as is struggling to handle them.
  • Then accept that you have no right to define what Spirituality is.
  • Nor do you have a right to decide if other people are Spiritual.
  • Understand that when you criticise others for not being Spiritual you are not behaving Spiritually.
  • Be truthful.
  • Be aware of yourself and your own feelings and actions.
  • Do not judge yourself or others, see, acknowledge and understand.

The last three are interesting. It came to my attention recently that some people consider being truthful to be unkind because they don't feel that it's right to destroy people. If you are destroying people with the truth then you are not being truthful you are being harsh. Gentle truth is possible.

Being aware of yourself and your own feelings and actions is vitally important. We might all think that we're right and others are wrong, but the truth normally lies somewhere in the middle of two people. Look at what you say and do and ask yourself how that really looks from the outside.

Don't seek to understand others, first seek to understand yourself. when you do you will know why it is so important to understand others.

Think about karma balance for a moment. If someone hurts you and you don't react at all then you are not allowing them the ability to grow. Telling other people or posting hints on social networking sites does not help the person you are at odds with. And who knows, if you had a chat about things you might find that no offence was intended or you might prevent them hurting and being hurt by gently explaining the effect of their actions.

The trouble with karma is that you can think you're being a nice person, but actually you're scoring points over others by being nicer than them. Think about it.

Remember, there are training courses to help you deal with conflict in a positive way. If you struggle, think about trying some of them.

Most importantly – you're human, you're allowed to be – but so are others.

Wishing you happy days and peaceful nights and the right to define your own Spirituality

In case you're wondering, my word for this life is kindness and I just do my best to demonstrate kindness at all times. to others, to animals, to the planet and to myself. I don't always succeed but I do try, and to be honest I find kindness an easier concept than Spirituality. Perhaps you will find an easier word to help you become the person you want to be.
